Asunta 2005
Asunta a woman
with strength, vision and brains. The AWT granted $600 to Asunta to provide
ten driving lessons and a bike. We hope Asunta passes her driving license
and Asunta moves from two wheels to four wheels. Well cars and petrol are
very expensive. This grant will also increase Asuntas employment opportunities.
23 year old Asunta moved
to Australia in October last year. She was forced to flee sudan with her
mother when only five years old. After 15 years in three different refugee
camps in three different countries Asunta. She has wasted no time and has
begun a four year degree in Theology at Newman College at Melbourne
University. Asunta currently supplements her income through working part
time as a On-Call interpreter.
Asa teenager Asunta
completed her year 12 in Kakuma refugee camp. Education in the camp was
basic and Asunta was one young woman among a class of 42 boys. Asunta feels
indebted to the missions at the camps for giving her learning opportunities
and this is a motivator in her theology studies. As a result of Asuntas
experiences she is very committed to encouraging young females to stay at
school and have an education this is culturally not a traditional
view. Her advocate at the Victorian Foundation for survivors of Torture
stated that Asunta has overcome enormous obstacles in the past and it
is a testament to her extraordinary determination and ability that today
she is enrolled in tertiary education and employed as an interpreter in
less than a year of her arrival in Australia.
A thank you to Claire
Wearne for all her terrific energy and her friend at Melbourne Bike City
for their contribution. We wish Asunta all the best with her bicycle,
driving lessons, studies, employment and family life.
