Camps & School Holiday Program
Young Asylum Seekers
Group (YAS) 2002
In March, 2002, the Young
Asylum Seeker Group (YAS), an initiative of the Red Cross in partnership
with Hotham Mission, received a $1000 grant from the AWT to run a school
holiday program. The YAS group provides educational and recreational
activities for socially isolated and financially disadvantaged young asylum
seekers. In April school holidays the YAS group went on a beach trip to the
coastal town of Breamlea, along with some kids the Western Young Peoples
Network(WYPN). There was a barbeque lunch, meeting with a life saver
provided a talk on identifying rips and safe swimming tips at Australian
beaches. The YAS group met with landcare and marine management workers and
learnt about different animals and sea creatures found on the beaches.
The group also went to the
Melbourne aquarium. In the July holidays the YAS group went to the amazing
circus OZ as well as ten pin bowling and a day at Maribyrnong with the mob
from WPIN and played soccer. As well as been fun and educational the
process helps the young people to form relationships, build trust and
engage with the local community. It also links young people learning to the
opportunities, services and the environment of Victoria.
