Grants and Projects - Aboringinal Australia

Supporting law students
In 2000, the Trust made a grant to two indigenous women studying law at Monash University, in support of their law studies. The women were touched by the Trust's recognition of the various challenges they face in achieving a legal education. Both women hope to use their legal knowledge to take on leadership roles in their communities.

Mentoring Program
The Anna Wearne Trust, along with the Koorie Heritage Trust and the Victorian Bar Association, established a mentoring program for indigenous law students. In May 2000, over 70 lawyers attended an evening at the Koorie Cultural Centre to hear speakers discussing cultural barriers for indigenous people in studying law and entering the legal profession. The importance of shared learning and responsibility were emphasised.

The mentoring program, which establishes contacts between students and lawyers, facilitates mutual understanding and dialogue between two otherwise detached groups.

Family relocation
The Trust is proud to have supported the Hunter-Roach family in relocating to live among the Ngarrindgeri community in South Australia. The family of talented musicians and dancers have made the exciting move and returned to their ancestral homeland to have the opportunity to reconnect with their heritage.
