Wild Becomes
Her
In 2000, a group of young
women aged between 12 and 17 years old joined together with the assistance
of director Julie McDonald and with support from Anglicare Youth Services,
to perform a play as part of the Next Wave Festival. The group, who are in
care, worked on the play for over four months.
Julie's idea was to
produce a play whereby the women could express some real issues about
growing up and at the same time to create something positive for
themselves. As the play evolved it became an exciting and diverse statement
of energy and ideas about their future. It not only gave the young women
something to focus upon, but something to own and, eventually, be proud of.
Songs and music were composed, dances choreographed and poems written. They
told their stories and sang of love, suffering, addiction, past misery and
fear for the future.
For many of the group,
this was an exciting opportunity to be creative in a positive way and to
bring together their thoughts, beliefs and stories. It was exhilarating
while it lasted. There were substantial feelings of loss in its ending. It
was suggested that a way for the young women to continue to develop their
talents and focus was to record the group's music and songs on to CD.
The Anna Wearne Trust
funded this dream by donating money for the young women to record their
album. Now each young woman will have a funky CD, something physical that
they can own proudly for the rest of their lives.
The Anna Wearne Trust is
honoured to assist these young women in producing their very own CD.
