Grants
and Projects - Drama, Music and Arts
Northland Secondary
College
Northland Secondary
College received a grant from the Anna Wearne Trust in 2000 to fund a group
of Year 7 students and staff to attend a five day camp at Phillip Island.
The aim of the camp was to enhance student-learning outcomes by working in
an environment outside the mainstream educational framework.
The project undertaken
was based on a unit of work that focused on the Stolen Generation and
included the development of a play. The play, called 'The Burnt Stick' was
written by Anthony Hill and tells the story of a member of the Stolen
Generation. In preparation for the play, the students read, performed,
wrote journals and created two murals.
Students preparing for the play
In November 2000 the play
was performed by the Year 7 students in front of a large group, made up of
families, friends and staff. The camp had allowed students and staff to be
far more creative away from the school environment and city distractions,
and the benefits were clearly visible not only in the performance but also
in the process building up to show time. A staff member involved in the
production told the Anna Wearne Trust:
It
was very exciting to see students who would normally not want to become
involved in reading activities, not only take on the responsibility of
learning lines and performing in a play
but to demonstrate their
belief in themselves and their peers to a complete performance.
Funding made it possible
for all students to attend the camp. Feedback from camp organisers and
Northland Secondary College teachers was that it was wonderful to see that
in this case no student was worse off educationally due to economic
disadvantage.
The Anna Wearne Trust
would like to congratulate all the young people and others involved for
their achievement.
